ADVERTORIAL
NM Insurance is entering its next phase of growth with a clear focus on strengthening specialist capability, expanding its product offering and making it easier for brokers to engage with the business.
With more than 20 years in the market, NM Insurance is investing across people, product and systems as it builds on its position as a trans-Tasman specialist in the marine, motorcycling, motorhome, caravanning, and cargo markets, with established operations across Australia and New Zealand.
At the centre of this strategy is a continued commitment to specialisation across both commercial and consumer lines, ensuring products and service models are aligned to the specific needs of the industries and customers they support.
NM Insurance’s commercial portfolio is dedicated to marine-related businesses, spanning business pack, hull, liability, cargo and carriers’ liability products. Alongside this, its consumer offering covers personal lines such as boat, motorcycle, caravan and motorhome insurance, connecting directly with end asset owners.
This model is applied consistently across both Australia and New Zealand, where similar market dynamics and industry structures allow NM Insurance to leverage shared expertise while maintaining local support with five offices across Australia and New Zealand.
This specialist focus is a key point of difference. While many insurance agencies participate in marine as part of a broader portfolio, NM Insurance operates as a dedicated provider within the category, with products, underwriting and service models built around the nuances of the sector.
Recent changes within the commercial team are designed to reinforce that positioning. The appointment of David Seckold has added senior capability across product development and commercial underwriting, alongside a broader alignment of the team to bring expertise together and improve delivery to market.
At the same time, the connection between commercial and consumer lines continues to strengthen. Shared insights from claims, repair networks and industry partnerships inform underwriting decisions and product development across both portfolios, creating more consistent outcomes for brokers and their clients.
“Having that visibility across both sides of the business gives us a more complete understanding of the risks we’re insuring,” Head of Commercial Glen Schembri says. “It allows us to apply that knowledge in a way that benefits both brokers and end customers.”
Technical expertise remains central to this approach. As risks become more specialised, the ability to assess exposures accurately and respond quickly is increasingly important.
“Having the right level of underwriting expertise is critical,” Mr Schembri says. “It supports faster decision-making, but just as importantly, it gives brokers confidence that risks are being assessed correctly and placed appropriately.”
NM Insurance continues to invest in senior underwriting capability and training, helping brokers better understand product nuances and reduce exposure to risk, particularly in more complex or less familiar segments.
Alongside people and product, systems investment is a major part of the growth strategy. The business is currently undertaking a full infrastructure rebuild across policy management, claims and accounting platforms to support scalability and improve the day-to-day experience for brokers.
Digital access is also being enhanced. Online portals are being upgraded to support faster, 24/7 transactions, while the new NM Insurance Broker Hub provides a central point for proposal forms, product documentation and key contacts.
NM Insurance is also introducing Net Promoter Score (NPS) surveys across claims to capture feedback and further refine service delivery across both commercial and consumer lines. For brokers, the objective is simpler engagement and clearer access to expertise across both sides of the business.
Commercial products remain exclusively distributed through brokers, supported by dedicated systems, local underwriting teams and BDM networks across both Australia and New Zealand. Brokers looking to engage with NM Insurance can connect directly with the distribution team to access quoting systems, with follow-up support including product training, technical guidance and portfolio development.
This structured approach is designed to support brokers at different stages, whether they are placing occasional risks or building a more specialised portfolio in marine and leisure lines.
NM Insurance’s trans-Tasman footprint also continues to support this model, with established teams across Australia and New Zealand providing local service backed by shared expertise across both markets.
For Mr Schembri, the next phase is about reinforcing what has already set the business apart.
“Our strength has always been in specialisation,” he says. “This next phase is about continuing to invest in that, across both our commercial and consumer portfolios, so we can keep delivering for brokers and their clients as the market evolves.”
